The Autistic Advantage
The guide to finding sustainable income as an autistic adult.
A workbook and online toolkit to work out what your job really costs you, name the strengths you bring, and weigh your options against your own limits. Every decision stays with you.

You've spent years fitting yourself around work. This is where you start measuring work against you.
What your week really costs
Most of us only count the hours on the timesheet. Add the commute, the rehearsing the night before and the recovery after, and the number changes. Three numbers are enough. Type over the example and see yours.
Travel, unpaid overtime, getting ready to be around people, and the recovery afterwards. A rough guess is fine.
What you were told, and what it is
Most of us spent years hearing our traits described as problems. So we hid the deep focus, softened the direct words and apologised for the questions. In work that suits how you think, those same traits are the reason people come to you.
"Too intense"
Deep focus
Hours on one problem, and you notice what other people skim past.
"Blunt"
Direct language
People know where they stand with you, and nothing gets lost in hints.
"Too picky"
Accuracy
You catch the error before it costs anyone anything.
"Rigid"
Consistency
You build systems that run the same way every time.
What you get
The workbook
Nine modules and three appendices, to do in any order.
The online workbook
Every exercise on your phone or laptop, plus a job ad decoder, an adjustment request that writes itself, and a one-page profile of how you work best to print or share. Your answers save on your device.
Twenty scripts
Ready to send, for asking in writing, asking for adjustments, saying no, chasing an invoice and leaving a meeting on time. Fill the gaps and copy.
Nine modules
- I
What work is really costing you
Your real working week and your real hourly rate, including the costs that never show up in a payslip.
- II
What you're actually good at
Turning the complaints you grew up with into strengths, and naming what each one needs to work.
- III
The Work Fit Scorecard
Nine lines, scored against your nervous system instead of a job ad. Use it on your job, a job you're eyeing, or something of your own.
- IV
Three paths
Adapt the work you have, choose a better fit, or build your own income. Staying is a fair choice, and so is going.
- V
Your energy budget
A one-week audit that shows where your energy really goes, and the hard limits any work has to fit inside.
- VI
Money that comes in unevenly
A floor number, a two-account system and a way to set a price that doesn't depend on how confident you feel that day. General guidance, not financial advice.
- VII
Phone-free admin
How to move calls into writing, and the full script library.
- VIII
Working with non-autistic people
The habits that cost us at work, like hints, vague feedback and quick calls, what they usually mean, and how to ask for things to be said directly.
- IX
Where to get support
The services and rights that apply in Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada, and your one next step.
Plus three appendices: starter plans for four sustainable income paths, a job ad decoder, and a workplace adjustment letter you can fill in and send.
Since starting HeyASD, many autistic adults have written to me about work. The good days, the hard ones, and the places where support was missing. This workbook brings it together: a calm, practical way to find work, and ways of working, that suit you.
Looking for ideas first? The free Career and Income Finder and all 44 ways to earn are a good place to start. The workbook helps you test whichever one you pick against your own week.
What this workbook is
You make the decisions
The workbook gives you numbers, scores, questions and words to use. What you do with them is yours to decide, at your own pace. Staying in the job you have is a fair outcome, and so is changing nothing yet.
General information only
Nothing here is financial, legal, tax, career or medical advice, and it can't account for everything about your situation. For decisions about money, benefits, the NDIS, tax or your rights at work, check with a qualified professional or the official service first.
Estimates from what you type
The calculator, scorecard and pricing tools work from your own numbers. They help you see your week more clearly. They can't predict how a job, a client or a business will go, and they make no promise about income or work.
Services and rules change
The support listed was checked in 2026. Check the official page before you rely on any of it.
Questions
Is this a book or a course?
It's a workbook. You read a short module, do the exercises in writing or in the online tools, and move on when you're ready. There are no videos, live calls or group sessions.
How do I get into the online tools?
After you buy, sign in to your HeyASD account with the email you used at checkout. Signing in takes a one-time code sent to your email, with no password to remember. The online workbook then opens at heyasd.com/work-that-fits.
Will it tell me whether to leave my job?
No. It lays out your real hourly rate, how each option scores against your own limits, and what you'd need to earn, side by side. The choice stays with you. Many readers use it to make the job they already have work better.
Do I have to want to work for myself?
No. Self-employment is one of three paths in the workbook. Most readers start by changing the job they already have, and plenty stay where they are with a clearer idea of what they need.
Will it work where I live?
The exercises work anywhere. The support and rights sections cover Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada, with notes for everywhere else.
I'm in burnout right now. Is this a good idea?
Start with the energy module and nothing else. Everything else can wait until you have a little more in the tank. If you're struggling to cope day to day, please talk to your GP or a mental health professional you trust.
Do I get updates?
Yes. The digital edition comes with free updates for life. When the workbook or the online tools improve, the new version is yours at no cost.
Sustainable work, found at your own pace.
Instant access to the workbook and online tools. Includes free lifetime updates.
