“Every misunderstanding in your life was made by two people, standing on two sides, each reading the other in a language they were never taught.”

From the opening of The World Between Us

Some of this might sound familiar

You replay conversations at two in the morning, looking for the moment it went wrong.

You’re always the one who reaches out, and you’re tired.

You said yes before you knew what you thought. Again.

You love someone deeply and still can’t find the words they need.

This book starts from a kinder reading of all of it, then gets practical.

There is a world between us. This book is about learning to live there.

Misunderstandings run both ways

In 2012 the autistic researcher Damian Milton named the double empathy problem. When an autistic person and a non-autistic person misread each other, the gap runs in both directions.

Later research by Catherine Crompton and her team found that autistic people pass information to each other as clearly as anyone. The trouble starts in the space between different ways of communicating.

The World Between Us takes that seriously, and then gives you the words, the scripts and the small habits that make that space easier to cross.

Chapter 1. Lost in Translation

You’ve probably replayed a conversation at two in the morning. You go back through it line by line. What you said, what they said, the pause after, the look on their face that you couldn’t read then and still can’t read now. You turn it over and over looking for the moment it went wrong, and you usually find it in yourself.

Too blunt. Too quiet. Too much. Said it wrong, said it at the wrong time, didn’t say the thing you were supposed to say. Most of us have carried a long list like that for years, and most of us were never told there was another way to read it.

Here’s the other way.

Asking for quiet

“I’m really glad to see you. My head’s full from today and I need about thirty minutes of quiet before I can talk properly. Nothing’s wrong between us. I’ll come and find you when I’m ready.”

The last line matters most. It tells your partner the quiet has an end, and that you’ll be the one to end it.

Why I wrote it

I wrote this book because navigating relationships as an autistic person is hard. There are so many misread signals. We get misunderstood, and sometimes pushed out altogether, even when everyone has the best of intentions, because both sides genuinely don’t understand each other. There’s a space between us that hardly ever gets named. Relationships matter. They enrich our lives. This book is a guide to building love, friendship and family across that space, so the process can be a little easier.
